What is Craniosacral Therapy?

Craniosacral therapy is an exceptionally gentle, yet profound therapy in which the primary aim is to create and maintain a healthy balanced state throughout the whole body.
Although working with the respiratory, cardio-vascular and nervous system, it is the craniosacral system which underlies all these, at the very core of our Being. It is a fundamental life force which creates and maintains our vitality. This vitality pervades every cell in the body.
Craniosacral therapy evolved in the early 20th century, from the work of the osteopath, Dr. William Sutherland who found that there is a subtle rhythmic movement in the body known as the cranio-sacral motion. This rhythm is caused by the constant tide-like ebbing and flowing of the cerebral spinal fluid which surrounds and bathes the central nervous system - the brain and spinal cord - providing it with nutrition and drainage.
However with injury, illness, infection, disease, tension, stress, trauma etc. this perfect balance will be disturbed. The body's health may reflect these disturbances on any level: physical, mental, emotional or spiritual, superficial or profound, recent or chronic, transient or deeply ingrained.
The craniosacral practitioner tunes in and "listens" to the body through various holds, particularly at the cranium (skull) and sacrum (pelvis), to read the health and vitality of the client. This helps the client and practitioner to become aware of disturbances to the body's healthy function and and can aid the body itself to facilitate release, reuniting mind and body to restore harmony, vitality and balance.
Craniosacral therapy is suitable for all ages from the newborn to the elderly. It can also be used throughout pregnancy. It works at a deep level, influencing all aspects of the person and long-term benefits may be experienced.
With its holistic approach craniosacral therapy may help with a wide range of conditions both acute and chronic.
